Description: Folio-sized 1887 edition of William Makepeace Thackeray's Christmas poem "The Mahogany Tree," with numerous illustrations by Frank T. Merrill, best known for illustrating "Little Women." The poem was first published anonymously in Punch Magazine in 1847. Text printed by Berwick & Smith and phototype illustrations printed by The Lewis Company. Tipped-in frontispiece portrait of the author. In publisher's brown cloth binding with a wood veneer onlay on the front cover and lettering stamped in gilt; top edge gilt. 14 x 11 inches; 54 unnumbered pages. Binding is conspicuously worn, with moderate bumping and fraying at the corners, scuffing, some loss to head and tail of spine, and started hinges. Small loss to top-right corner of first few leaves, not affecting the text or illustrations; moderate foxing throughout the text. Good only.
