Description: Limited edition of "A Short Narrative of the Late Troubles in England," a defense of Charles I in his quarrels with the English Parliament. No. 20 of 320 copies printed for sale. Published by F. E. Robinson & Co. and printed at the Russell Press. Originally published anonymously in Latin as "Elenchus Motuum Nuperorum in Anglia" and translated into English in 1649. Authorship of this work has been attributed to George Bate (1608-1669), a court physician who treated Charles I, Oliver Cromwell, and Charles II.
In full parchment binding, decorated in gilt on the covers and spine in the style of bindings made for Charles I; top edge gilt. From the "Note On The Binding" by Cyril Davenport: "The binding chosen for the present edition of Dr Bates' "Elenchus Motuum" is taken from that covering some Almanacks of 1624, which were bound together for Charles, Prince of Wales... In the centre are four impressions of the Prince of Wales' triple ostrich feather badge within a coronet and with a blank label, arranged as a star. In each corner of the rectangle on each side is an ornament, practically forming a quarter circle, adorned with scrolls and a design of a heart, and the field is powdered with a semis of flaming hearts" (page xiii). With a half-title. Title and imprint within a decorative border. Photogravure frontispiece portrait of Charles I in his final days, by Swan Electric Engraving Co., after George Lid. Octavo (with turned chainlines); xxxvii, [3], 151, [1] pages (last page blank), [1] leaf of plates; a-b8 [A]4 B-K8 L4; 7.25 x 4.5 inches.
From the library of Lawrence Timpson (1865-1937) at Maizeland, also known as Maizefield, the family home in Red Hook, Dutchess County, New York, with engraved bookplate on front pastedown. Timpson was a lawyer and a Captain in the New York First Regiment. He also served in the British Expeditionary Force during World War One and permanently relocated to England with his family in 1924.
Binding lightly worn and soiled at the edges; gilt decoration worn in parts of the spine, but bright on the covers. Small spots of foxing in the margins of the plate, not affecting the image, and mild offsetting of the plate to the title page, else the text is clean and bright. Very Good+. An attractive copy.
