Description: Cabinet card with albumen print containing a studio portrait of a young woman in a dress wearing glasses. Verso of card bears a decorative design printed in brown. Name and address of photographer (Andrew Simson of 456 Main St., Buffalo, NY) at foot of card and on verso. Undated, between 1896 and 1900. 5.5 x 3.875 inches (print); 6.5 x 4.25 inches (mount). Light scratches to surface of print, light edgewear and soiling to the mount. Very Good.
Andrew Simson (circa 1837-1922) was said to be one of the first photographers in Buffalo to recognize photography as an art form. In 1896, he opened a studio at 456 Main Street in Buffalo with Howard D. Beach, his friend and former apprentice. Beach purchased the remainder of Simson's interest in the studio four years later.
