Description: Artist's book celebrating DunDun, stools handcrafted by displaced villagers from rural Dameng, Henan Province, China using found materials, like discarded insulation foam from the construction sites in the location of their former homes. The villagers use DunDun to sit with other villagers and re-constitute a sense of community in their now fragmented world. In English and Chinese. Each copy of DunDun is unique, with textiles made from recycled curtains, pillowcases, bed sheets, and sofa coverings. Consists of two zines containing chiefly color photo illustrations, housed in cloth envelope. First zine "Dun Dun" sewn with white thread in transparent plastic wrapper; 5.5 x 4 inches; [40] pages, including [2] foldout leaves. Second zine "(dūn)" sewn with white thread in cloth wrapper; 4.25 x 6.25 inches; [88] pages. Clean and crisp. Fine.
This book was created as part of the creators' Rehoming DunDun project, drawing attention to the effects of urbanization, modernization, and gentrification. They also brought DunDun back to New York to be "adopted" by new owners. Note: The creators have referred to this set as "DunDun's Pack" in publicity materials, but Worldcat has titled it "DunDun."
