Theo Bikel (1924-2015) was a prolific actor and musician who was best known for creating the role of Captain von Trapp in the original Broadway production of The Sound of Music and for playing Tevye in Fiddler on the Roof more than any other actor to date. He was nominated for Tony and Academy Awards and has a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. He was also a renowned folk singer and founded the Newport Folk Festival. He sang in nearly 20 languages and accompanied himself on guitar, mandolin, balalaika and harmonica. In addition to his performing arts work, Bikel was active in the civil rights movement.
