Description: Manuscript account book of music teacher Nellie Austin of Long Ridge [Connecticut?], with entries dated 1877-1886, detailing names of students, dates of music lessons, and payments collected. The last several pages of the ledger contain a summary of payments received by date. Nellie charged $1 per lesson, and in her busiest year (1880), collected more than $90. Nellie has completely filled the account book, with additional notes, verse, and mathematical calculations on the endpapers. Bound in quarter tan leather, with single-line fillets in gilt on the spine, marbled paper over boards, and two leather loops at the board edges (presumably pencil holders). 5 x 3 inches; 132 pages. Binding generally worn with about a half-inch loss to the leather at the head of the spine and a tear to the leather at the tail of the spine; small area of loss to front free endpaper and first leaf, some leaves with mild soiling. Good. A detailed financial record of a 19th-century American woman's work as a music teacher.
