Description: William Morris' translation of Amis and Amile, the medieval French legend about friendship and sacrifice between two knights, printed by Morris at the Kelmscott Press in 1894. First edition. One of 500 paper copies. Printed in red and black in the Chaucer type designed by Morris, on handmade Batchelor paper with the "Perch" watermark. Wood-engraved title page with ornamental grapevine border, page [1] also with the grapevine border. One 13-line, five 6-line, and numerous 3-line wood-engraved initials designed by Morris and engraved by William Harcourt Hooper. Original publisher's binding of quarter linen with blue printed paper over boards. Housed in custom marbled paper-covered chemise in marbled paper-covered slipcase with gold-tooled teal goatskin spine (sunned). 16mo; 6 x 4.5 inches; [10], 67, [7] pages. From the collection of Arthur Williams Hall (1873-1952) of Massachusetts, bibliophile and manufacturer of laboratory equipment, with his acquisition note in pencil on the front pastedown; thence by descent through three generations.
