As early as 1970, La Raza Silkscreen Center in the Mission District of San Francisco began producing prints by Chicane and Latine artists for community organizations. The prints conveyed resistance, affirmation, and solidarity during turbulent times. In 1974, the Center relocated, expanded into offset printing, and became La Raza Graphic Center. The Center remained a major producer of posters and prints in the Bay Area for almost two decades. Juan Fuentes, designer of this poster, joined the Center in its early years.
The Alliance Against Women's Oppression (AAWO), formerly the Third World Women's Alliance (TWWA), was composed of a multi-racial alliance of queer and straight women who engaged in political advocacy, organizing, and education from an anti-capitalist and feminist perspective. Its work focused on women's rights, with an intersectional approach that considered race, gender, class, and sexuality. Issues that it worked on included infant mortality, reproductive rights, involuntary sterilization, Central American and African women's liberation, and lesbian and gay rights.
