Title: [Scrapbook of family dog photos and dog training articles]

Publication: [Pennsylvania], 1930.

Description: Dog-themed scrapbook containing photos of a Pennsylvania family's pet dog Lady, alone and with family members, as well as newspaper clippings of dog training articles. By an unknown compiler, dated 1928-1930, with captions in manuscript that mention locations in Pennsylvania (Scranton and White Rocks). 6 x 8 inches; 19 leaves (last four blank). Five black-and-white photographs (silver gelatin prints?) pasted to first three leaves, plus one photo secured with a metal fastener; most show Lady at the family farmhouse, one at White Rocks. 11 clippings of dog training articles by L.J. Brosemer, director of the Chappel Kennel Foundation, and one clipping of an article by Bruce Catton about General Howe's dog during the American Revolutionary War. In faux-snakeskin card wrappers, with black cloth spine, the leaves secured with two metal fasteners at the inner margin. Bookplate of Francis P. Fretwell and his Monfret Cynological Library. The wrappers with chips and tears at the edges and around the spine, some fading of the photographs, and toning of the newspaper clippings. Good+. Charming evidence of the close relationship between a dog and her owners in pre-Depression and early Depression-era Pennsylvania. The previous owner of this scrapbook, Francis Fretwell (1926-2005), was a renowned breeder of champion Standard Poodles, and his Monfret Cynological Library was estimated to contain 18,000 volumes, the largest privately-owned dog book collection in the world.
