The American Episcopalian Book of Common Prayer, first issued in 1789, remained in use until 1892, with minor amendments. This 1870 edition is issued with "Selections from the Psalms of David in Metre, with Hymns, Suited to the Feasts and Fasts of the Church, and Other Occasions of Public Worship," as well as "Additional Hymns Set Forth by the House of Bishops, at the Request of the House of Clerical and Lay Deputies, in General Convention, October 1865, to be Used in the Congregations of the Protestant Episcopal Church in the United States of America." Each work has a separate title page.

Bound in full leather with cover extensions (also known as yapp edges), blind-stamped covers and spine, "Common Prayer" and former owner's name "Lucy May Shelton" stamped in gilt on the front cover, and gilt text edges. 3.625 x 2.125 inches; 38, 356, 288 pages. Lucy May Shelton's signature on the front free endpaper. A Good only copy. Binding with edgewear; first and last several leaves and endpapers heavily stained from the binding. A much-loved copy of a miniature prayer book, with a binding personalized for its former owner.
