Title: VOICES: A Publications [sic] of the BROTHERRS Project
Author: BROTHERRS Project (Blacks Reaching Out Through Health Education and Risk Reduction Services)
Publication: Chicago, Il.: BROTHERRS Project, 1991.
Description: Volume 1, Issue 1 of the VOICES newsletter. The BROTHERRS Project (Blacks Reaching Out Through Health Education and Risk Reduction Services) offered educational seminars, community outreach, and risk reduction groups to help prevent the spread of HIV/AIDS in Chicago's Black community in the 1990s. A letter from the editor Milton Howze states, "VOICES is a health care newsletter, but it is more than that. It is also about the reaffirmation and self empowerment of life. Black Life." (page 9). The newsletter includes an interview with Dr. Richard McDonald, who specialized in treating HIV/AIDS, as well as an extensive resource directory. Additional topics include a recent benefit gala, HIV testing, the difference between HIV and AIDS, statistics on HIV/AIDS in Chicago, and financial assistance programs for patients.
Nine stapled sheets of 8.5 x 11-inch white stock paper, photocopied text on recto and verso; 17, [1] pages. Light toning, minor soiling on the last page, and trivial edgewear, else Near Fine.
An excellent example of outreach, support, and hope within the Black community of Chicago, at a moment when HIV/AIDS was on the rise, misinformation was rampant, and treatment and services, especially for communities of color, were woefully underfunded.
